Barcelona, Spain - In a surprising turn of events, Xavi Hernandez, the head coach of Barcelona, has announced his decision to step down at the end of the season. The decision comes on the heels of Barcelona's 5-3 defeat at the hands of Villarreal, leaving them 10 points behind LaLiga leaders Real Madrid.

Expressing his sentiments, Xavi stated that the feeling of being Barca coach was unpleasant and cruel. He mentioned that he often felt a lack of respect, believing his work was not adequately valued, which wore him down terribly.

The announcement was made after a match where Barcelona conceded twice in added time at the Nou Camp, further intensifying the pressure on Xavi. Girona, currently sitting in second place with 52 points, had also surpassed Barcelona in the league standings.

Xavi declared that he wanted to announce that on June 30, he would no longer continue as the coach at Barca. He expressed his belief that the situation needed to change course and mentioned that, as a cule [Barcelona fan], he could not allow the current situation.

Xavi, a former Barcelona player who took over as head coach in November 2021, highlighted the toll the coaching role had taken on his mental health. He expressed hope that his departure would alleviate the stress and tension within the team.

He added that he was a positive person, but the energy went down to a point where he thought that there was no sense.

Despite his relatively short tenure of less than three years, Xavi managed to secure the Supercopa de Espana and LaLiga titles for Barcelona last season. However, the team struggled in the current campaign, facing defeats in the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey.

Spanish football expert Semra Hunter commented on Xavi's departure, calling it "bonkers" considering his achievements with a team facing financial challenges. Xavi would officially conclude his managerial stint after less than three years, with his contract originally set to run until 2025.

Xavi emphasized that his decision was made several days ago, and the recent defeat to Villarreal merely prompted him to announce it sooner. He stated that he thought it was the best for the club and that he didn't want to be a problem for the club of his heart. He added that he didn't want to be a problem but a solution, and he believed that between now and June, he could still be a solution.

As Barcelona faces Napoli in the last 16 of the Champions League in February, the club will navigate through the remainder of the season with a change in leadership, marking the end of Xavi's coaching era.
